A class which could loosely be defined as being about "cultural modes and codes in music production" or "scrambled narratives in psycho-acoustic fictional space". Specifically filtered through the spectral crypto-logical looking glass of the "inexplicable recording techniques, drug fueled irrationality and inherently abusive personality" (1) of post-punk record producer Martin Hannett (Joy Division, ESG, Magazine, The Durutti Column, Happy Mondays). The backbone of the class is a thirty minute film "essay" by Kosten Koper, which provides theoretical openings to practical examples via three of Hannett's characteristic cloaked studio instructions to Joy Division / Section 25. "I want you to play that again... only this time make it faster, but slower" : dialectics of punk funk, cold wars and fast breeders, 1+1=0, calvanist post-industrialism, digital / analog, cabalistic scryings. "Can you do it a bit more cocktail party?" : ghosts in the root canal, Ben Watson's "spectral music", discreet music, Derrida v Reynolds v Keenan. "Can you make it a bit more yellow?" : Pop-Mekhanika, dilettantism and form, "the sound of the moon moving round the earth" (2), research patterns of the Belgian Synaesthesia Association, inarticulated scores and collective composition.
This class will be augmented by a special live performance by Dutch musician Frans De Waard, performing a new piece created for entirely with sounds from the 2 CD set 'Joy Division : In the Studio With Martin Hannett' (Interstate, UK, 2008)
